Phone & voice

Live today

The number, and the texts that follow every call.

Twilio is the plumbing under the number and the texts. You never log into it. A local number comes with the plan, and everything the receptionist texts, to a customer or to you, goes out from it.

A sound wave connected by a dashed line to a phone, the voice line behind the receptionist

How the connection actually works

The number

A local number is part of the plan. You can forward missed calls to it, publish it as your line, or port your existing number onto it. When Twilio owns the inbound call, you can also control how long your own phone rings first.

The texts

After a booking, the customer gets a confirmation to reply YES to, and a reminder the evening before. A caller who hangs up can get a recovery text. Urgent calls and callback requests text your on-call number. A photo a customer texts back is stored on the call and forwarded to your on-call number.

What you can see

Every outbound text carries a delivery status (queued, sent, delivered, undelivered, or failed) on the dashboard’s text thread. A text that failed is flagged, not shown as if it went.

Daytime and after hours

During the day

With a plain carrier forward, your phone rings first and the carrier decides how long. With Twilio in front, the dashboard ring count decides.

After hours

The receptionist answers and the confirmation text goes out after the call. Texts to your own on-call number are never held back by a region or spend cap.

What setup looks like

You pick one of three paths for your number. Nothing else to configure on Twilio.

  1. Pick a path

Forward missed calls to the included number, publish the included number, or port your number onto it.

  2. Set who gets urgent texts

Give us the owner or on-call number.

  3. Confirm text regions

Customer texts only go to the regions your account allows, Canada and the US by default. Only Canadian numbers deliver today.

  4. Make a test call and text

We place a test booking and confirm the texts arrive.

Limits and edge cases

  • Texts to US numbers are not delivering yet. They need A2P 10DLC registration to be approved.
  • Every customer text honours STOP and goes only to allowed regions, with an optional daily spend cap.
  • There is no retry on a failed text. It is flagged so you can follow up.
  • Carrier forwarding varies. Check the Keep your number page before you choose a path.

This is for

  • Every shop on a paying plan. The number is included.

This isn't

  • Shops that need US customer texts to deliver today.

What we won't claim

  • Send marketing or bulk texts. Texts are one customer at a time.
  • Text international numbers unless your account lists their region.
  • Guarantee delivery. A carrier can filter a text.

Twilio questions

Do I have to give up my number?

No. You can keep it and forward, or port it. See Keep your number.

Will my customers get texts?

Canadian customers do. US numbers are not delivering until the carrier registration is approved.

Can I text a customer myself?

Yes, one at a time, from their page on the dashboard. It starts from a suggested message and goes through the same guards as the agent’s texts.
